How to Start a Clothing Brand in Bangalore: From First Designs to First Sales
Bangalore is one of India's major garment manufacturing centres, with fabric markets, printing units, tailoring workshops and a large, style-conscious young population. That combination makes it one of the best cities in India to start a clothing brand. It's also why there are so many brands competing for the same Instagram feed.
Part 1: Shape the idea
Pick a niche you can own. "Clothing for everyone" is a department store. Strong brands start narrow:
- Handloom-inspired workwear for women
- Oversized streetwear with Kannada typography
- Sustainable basics in organic cotton
- Athleisure for Indian body types and weather
- Modest fashion, maternity wear, plus-size fashion, kids' wear
Define your customer. Age, style, where they shop today, what they pay, and what annoys them about current options: fit, fabric, sizing, prints or price.
Start with a small collection. 5–15 designs in a few colours is enough to launch. It keeps sampling, inventory and photography manageable.
Part 2: Execution
Sampling. Work with a sampling tailor or manufacturer to create samples. Test fit on real people of different sizes, wash-test fabrics, and refine before production.
Manufacturing. Options include small-batch manufacturers, print-on-demand for graphic tees, or your own tailoring unit. Agree in writing on minimum order quantities, quality checks, timelines and what happens with defects.
Business setup. Register the business, get GST registration (needed for most online selling), search and file a trademark for the brand name, and follow labelling requirements for garments.
Your online store. Shopify or a similar platform is fastest. Essentials:
- Great photography: on-model shots, close-ups of fabric, and video
- A clear size guide with measurements, not just S/M/L
- Easy exchanges, since sizing is the main worry for online clothing buyers
- UPI, cards and a considered COD policy
- Shipping integration and WhatsApp order updates
- Tracking set up before you run ads
Inventory strategy. Use drops and pre-orders to test demand, and reorder best-sellers rather than producing everything in large quantities.
Part 3: First sales
- Instagram first. Reels of styling, behind-the-scenes production, fabric stories, founder story
- Creator collaborations. Micro-creators in your niche, gifted first
- Pop-ups and flea markets in Bangalore: fast feedback, early fans and content
- Meta ads with several creatives, sent to collection pages
- WhatsApp and email for drop announcements and restocks
- Marketplaces like Myntra or Amazon later, once your own store and supply chain are steady
Your 30-day kickstart plan
- Week 1: niche, collection plan, brand name and trademark search
- Week 2: samples finalised; production booked; photoshoot planned
- Week 3: photoshoot; store build; Instagram teaser content
- Week 4: launch drop with pre-orders, creator posts and first ads
Where a launch partner fits
Designing and producing the collection takes all your attention. The launch (store, tracking, Instagram system, creator outreach and first ads) needs to be ready the day your stock arrives, not weeks later.
We set up that launch stack as one team, from an online store and tracking to a social media framework and a controlled first ad test, with a fixed, itemised quote. Everything stays in your brand's name, and we start lean so more of your budget goes into stock and content.
