How to Start a Tours and Travels Business in Shivamogga: Jog Falls, Agumbe and the Malnad Circuit

Shivamogga is called the "Gateway of Malnad" for a reason. Jog Falls, Agumbe's rainforest, the Sakrebailu elephant camp, the Tyavarekoppa lion and tiger safari, Kodachadri, Kundadri, the Sharavathi backwaters and the temples around Thirthahalli and Sagar draw visitors every year.

Most of them come from Bangalore, Mysuru, Mangaluru and Hubballi, and most struggle with the same things: where to stay, how to get around, which roads are open in the rains, and how to fit it into a weekend. That's the business.

Part 1: Choose your model

ModelWhat you doInvestment
Taxi and travel serviceAirport, railway and outstation trips with driversVehicles or tie-ups with owners
Tour packagesPlanned trips with transport, stays and itinerariesMostly partnerships
Experience toursGuided treks, nature walks, birding, heritage, food trailsGuides and local knowledge
Group and corporate tripsCollege tours, office offsites, pilgrimage groupsLarger vehicles, coordination
Booking agentHomestays, resorts and activities on commissionLow; relationships

Many successful local operators combine transport with two or three well-designed packages.

Part 2: Licences and permits

Check current rules with the RTO, the tourism department and a CA before you start.

  • Business registration (proprietorship, partnership or LLP) and a current account
  • Commercial vehicle registration and tourist permits from the RTO for vehicles carrying paying passengers, plus commercial insurance and fitness certificates
  • Driver licences and badges as required for commercial vehicles
  • GST registration depending on turnover and services
  • Karnataka Tourism registration for travel agents and tour operators (voluntary but builds trust; check current schemes)
  • Forest department permissions for treks and protected areas. Rules for places like Kodachadri and wildlife areas change; always check current permits and seasons

Part 3: Design packages people want

  • Weekend from Bangalore: Friday night departure, Jog Falls and Sharavathi on Saturday, Agumbe sunset or Kundadri on Sunday
  • Monsoon waterfalls trail: Jog, Barkana viewpoint, Kunchikal, Hidlumane (check access and safety each season)
  • Wildlife and family: Sakrebailu elephant camp, Tyavarekoppa safari, Gajanur
  • Temple and heritage circuit: Ikkeri, Keladi, Sringeri, Kollur (nearby districts)
  • Trek packages: Kodachadri and Kavaledurga with local guides

Every package should say what's included, exact pricing, what to pack, cancellation terms and the best season.

Safety first. Monsoon roads, leeches, slippery viewpoints and closures are real. Experienced drivers, first-aid kits and honest advice build the reviews that grow the business.

Part 4: Partnerships

  • Homestays and resorts around Jog, Agumbe, Thirthahalli and Sagar. See homestay marketing near Jog Falls and Agumbe
  • Local guides and naturalists
  • Restaurants on popular routes
  • Bus operators and vehicle owners for larger groups

Agree on commissions, payment terms and what happens on cancellation, in writing.

Part 5: Getting bookings online

Website with package pages. One page per package with photos, itinerary, inclusions, price, FAQ and a WhatsApp booking button. Write in English for Bangalore visitors and add Kannada where it helps. See website design in Shivamogga.

Google. A Google Business Profile for "travels in Shivamogga" and "taxi Shimoga", plus pages targeting "Jog Falls tour package from Bangalore" and similar searches. See local SEO for Shivamogga.

Instagram and YouTube. Waterfalls and forests are made for reels. Post trip highlights (with guests' permission), road updates and seasonal guides.

Ads to Bangalore. Target Bangalore audiences interested in travel and trekking, starting a few weeks before the monsoon and long weekends. See Google Ads in Shivamogga.

Reviews. Ask every group after the trip. See how to get your first 50 Google reviews.
