Should Your Shivamogga Business Have a Kannada Website? A Guide to Bilingual Sites
Walk through Gandhi Bazaar or any market in Shivamogga and most conversations are in Kannada. Yet almost every business website in the city is English-only. That's a gap, and for some businesses, a real opportunity.
Who benefits most from Kannada pages
A bilingual website makes the biggest difference when your customers include:
- Farmers and agri-businesses: seeds, fertiliser, machinery, areca and agri-services
- Families and older customers: hospitals, clinics, schools, jewellery, real estate
- Rural and taluk-level customers from Sagar, Thirthahalli, Shikaripura, Soraba and Hosanagara
- Government-facing services and NGOs
- Coaching centres whose parents prefer Kannada, even when classes are in English
If you mainly serve tourists from other states, IT professionals or customers across India, English-first is fine, though Kannada social content can still help locally.
The SEO opportunity
More people are searching in Kannada, typing in Kannada script or using voice search in Kannada. Very few local businesses have Kannada pages, so there's much less competition for those searches.
A Kannada page for "ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ದಂತ ವೈದ್ಯರು" (dentist in Shivamogga) competes with far fewer pages than the English version.
How to do it properly
1. Separate pages per language. Each page should exist in both languages at its own URL, for example /services/dental-implants and /kn/services/dental-implants. This lets Google index both.
2. Real Kannada, written by a person. Automatic translation widgets produce awkward Kannada that native speakers notice immediately, and Google doesn't index widget-translated text well. Write naturally, the way your staff would explain it to a customer.
3. Hreflang tags. These tell Google that the two pages are translations of each other, so it shows the Kannada page to Kannada searchers and the English page to English searchers.
4. A clear language switcher at the top of every page: "ಕನ್ನಡ | English".
5. Good Kannada fonts. Make sure the font displays Kannada script clearly on phones and loads quickly.
6. Translate what matters first. Home page, main service pages and contact page. Blog posts and policies can come later.
Don't forget your Google Business Profile
Keep your business name exactly as on your signboard. You can write your description and posts in a way that includes both languages, and reply to Kannada reviews in Kannada.
Kannada on social media
Even if your website stays English-only for now, try Kannada on Instagram and WhatsApp:
- Kannada captions or bilingual captions on Reels
- Reels with Kannada voiceovers. Local, natural, conversational
- Festival greetings for Ugadi, Dasara, Deepavali and Rajyotsava
- WhatsApp broadcasts in Kannada for older customers
Local content in the local language often gets noticeably better engagement than polished English posts. More in our Instagram and WhatsApp marketing guide.
Does it cost much more?
The main extra cost is writing and checking the Kannada content. The technical setup (separate URLs, hreflang, switcher) is small if planned from the start, and more effort to add later. See what a website costs in Shivamogga.
