How AI Helped Find PHP2Shell: What AI-Discovered Vulnerabilities Mean for Every Website Owner
Updated 24 October 2026. Claims about AI's role come from the researchers' own write-ups.
The PHP2Shell vulnerabilities (explained) were serious on their own: two critical flaws in PHP, the language behind most of the web. But the story that has security teams talking is how they were found.
What the researchers say happened
According to Wiz Research, which reported the flaws:
- 19 August 2026: the first vulnerability was discovered
- 20 August: unauthenticated code execution confirmed against Drupal
- 21 August: confirmed against WordPress
- 24 August: reported to the PHP security team
- 21 September: PHP acknowledged and began a coordinated fix
- 21 October: patched releases and public disclosure
Wiz said it used its own AI tooling along with frontier AI models from major labs throughout the work: finding the bugs, developing exploits, adapting them to different PHP versions and memory layouts, building detections and validating patches. Another research firm, Calif, which built a public exploit chain, also said it used AI models. The PHP Foundation credited Calif, OpenAI and Wiz, among others.
The researchers' key claim: the bugs had existed for over a decade. What changed was that AI lowered the effort needed to turn them into a reliable exploit. Wiz said a single researcher finished in about a week work that previously would have taken a highly skilled team months. That's their own assessment, but it matches what many security researchers have been saying through 2026.
Why this matters beyond PHP
1. Old code is being re-examined at machine speed. Mature, widely used software (web servers, languages, CMSs, libraries) has millions of lines of code that humans reviewed slowly over years. AI can now search it far faster.
2. The same tools help attackers. Exploit attempts against PHP2Shell were seen on 17 October, four days before disclosure, after information leaked. Once details were public, Cloudflare reported attempts rising from tens of thousands within 45 minutes to millions by the next morning.
3. The patch window is shrinking. "We'll update next month" used to be risky. Now it can be days, or hours, before mass scanning starts.
4. More disclosures are coming. Wiz said it believes other untracked variants of these bugs exist. Expect a steady stream of AI-assisted findings across popular software.
The good news
AI is helping defenders too:
- Researchers found PHP2Shell and reported it before it was widely abused
- Vendors used AI to build detection rules and validate patches
- Hosting companies and CDNs pushed protections within hours
The organisations that came through PHP2Shell best weren't the ones with the most security tools. They were the ones that could update quickly.
What small businesses should do differently
You don't need an AI security team. You need speed and simplicity:
| Do | Why |
|---|---|
| Run supported software only | Unsupported PHP versions (8.1 and older) got no official fix (dates) |
| Use managed hosting if you don't have a sysadmin | Hosts like Hostinger and SiteGround patched within a day (host status) |
| Turn on automatic updates where safe | Minor and security updates should apply without waiting for you |
| Keep fewer plugins and dependencies | Less code means fewer places for the next bug |
| Put a WAF/CDN in front | Edge rules can buy time between disclosure and patching |
| Have tested backups | If something gets through, you can restore quickly |
| Know who to call | A developer or agency who can patch the same day |
Our website security checklist turns this into concrete steps.
What developers should learn from it
- Patch pipelines matter: pinned versions, automated rebuilds and fast deploys (Docker and Laravel guide)
- Memory safety and runtime security aren't just C-programmer concerns; they affect every web app built on top
- AI tools are now part of security work. Learning to use them for code review, testing and threat modelling is a career skill. See what freshers should learn in the age of AI coding
The bigger picture
2026 has shown AI making software faster to build, and faster to break. For businesses, the practical takeaway is simple: choose setups that update themselves, or have someone responsible for updating them the same week. That's the difference between a headline and an incident.
