Google Search Console for Small Businesses: Setup, Sitemaps and the Reports That Matter
If you have a website and haven't set up Google Search Console, you're guessing. Search Console shows what people searched before they found you, which pages Google has indexed and what's broken. It's free, and it's the first thing we set up on every site we launch.
Step 1: Add your website
Go to Google Search Console and sign in with the Google account you use for the business (not a staff member's personal account).
You'll see two property types:
- Domain property (recommended): covers
www, non-www,httpandhttpstogether. Verified by adding a TXT record in your domain's DNS settings. - URL prefix property: covers one exact version of the site. Verified with an HTML file, a meta tag or Google Analytics.
Choose Domain if you can access your domain provider's DNS settings (GoDaddy, Hostinger, Cloudflare and so on). Copy the TXT record Google gives you, add it in DNS, wait a few minutes and click Verify.
Step 2: Submit your sitemap
A sitemap is a file listing your site's pages, usually at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. Most website builders and frameworks generate one automatically.
In Search Console, open Sitemaps, enter sitemap.xml and submit. Within a few days you'll see how many pages Google discovered.
Common issue: if your site redirects example.com to www.example.com, the sitemap must list the www URLs. Listing URLs that redirect causes fetch errors and indexing warnings.
Step 3: Check indexing
Open Pages (under Indexing). You'll see pages that are indexed and pages that aren't, with reasons:
| Reason | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Discovered, currently not indexed | Google knows the page but hasn't crawled it yet | Normal for new sites; improve internal links |
| Crawled, currently not indexed | Google saw it and chose not to index it | Make the page more useful and distinct |
| Page with redirect | The URL redirects elsewhere | Fine, if intended |
| Excluded by 'noindex' tag | The page tells Google not to index it | Fine for thank-you pages; fix if it's a real page |
| Not found (404) | Broken URL | Redirect old URLs or fix the links |
| Duplicate, Google chose different canonical | Two pages look the same | Set canonical tags or merge pages |
For a new or updated page, paste its URL into the URL Inspection bar at the top and click Request indexing.
Step 4: Read the Performance report
This is the report that grows your business. It shows:
- Queries: what people typed into Google
- Pages: which of your pages appeared
- Impressions, clicks, CTR and average position
Three things to look for each month:
- High impressions, low clicks: your page appears but people don't click. Rewrite the title and meta description to match the search better.
- Position 8–20: you're close to page one. Improve that page's content and add internal links to it.
- Queries you didn't expect: these are content ideas, and sometimes service ideas.
Compare the last 3 months with the previous 3 to see real trends rather than daily noise.
Step 5: Other reports worth a glance
- Core Web Vitals: speed and stability on mobile and desktop. See website speed for small businesses
- Links: which sites link to you, and your most-linked pages
- Manual actions and security issues: should always say "no issues"
Also link Search Console to Google Analytics so you can see search data alongside enquiries.
Your monthly 15-minute routine
- Check Pages for new errors
- Check Performance: top queries, pages near page one, low-CTR titles
- Request indexing for new or updated pages
- Note one improvement to make this month
