Google AI Overviews and AI Mode for Local Businesses: How to Show Up When Customers Ask AI in Bangalore and Shivamogga
Updated 24 October 2026.
Local search used to be simple: someone typed "dentist near me", saw three businesses on a map, and called one. That still happens, but more and more, people ask longer questions:
- "Which dentist in Shimoga does painless root canal and is open on Sunday?"
- "Best place in Indiranagar for a birthday dinner for 10 people under ₹1,500 each?"
- "ಶಿವಮೊಗ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಉತ್ತಮ ಕೋಚಿಂಗ್ ಸೆಂಟರ್ ಯಾವುದು?" (Which is the best coaching centre in Shivamogga?)
Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode answer these questions directly, often naming specific businesses. Here's how to be one of them.
Indian languages changed the game
In October 2025, Google expanded AI Mode to seven more Indian languages, including Kannada, using a custom Gemini model built to handle local language nuance rather than simple translation. Search Live (voice and camera search) has since expanded to more Indian languages too.
For Shivamogga and much of Bangalore, that means customers can ask in Kannada, by voice, the way they'd ask a friend. Businesses with information available only in English, or not available at all, risk being skipped.
Where AI answers get local information
Google hasn't published exactly how AI answers choose businesses. Based on how local search works, they draw heavily on:
- Google Business Profile: category, services, hours, attributes, photos, posts, Q&A-style information
- Reviews: ratings, how recent they are, and what reviewers actually say
- Your website: service pages, prices, FAQs, About page, structured data
- Other trusted sources: directories (Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Practo for doctors), news, associations
- Consistency: the same name, address and phone number everywhere
If AI Mode recommends "a physiotherapy clinic open on Sundays with good reviews for back pain", it needs to find that information somewhere.
The local AI visibility checklist
Google Business Profile
- Primary category exact; secondary categories for each main service
- Services list filled in with descriptions and prices or price ranges
- Accurate hours, including special hours for festivals
- Attributes: wheelchair access, parking, women-led, online appointments, languages spoken
- Recent photos of the place, team and work
- Weekly posts with offers or updates
- WhatsApp and website links working
Full guide: Google Business Profile checklist.
Reviews
- A steady flow of new reviews every month
- Reviews that naturally mention services and areas ("knee physiotherapy", "near Gopi Circle")
- Replies to every review
See how to get your first 50 Google reviews.
Website
- One page per service with what it is, who it's for, price range, duration, and how to book
- An FAQ section answering the exact questions customers ask on calls
- Areas served stated clearly
- LocalBusiness structured data with name, address, phone, hours and geo-coordinates
- A factual About page (who runs the business, since when, qualifications)
- Key information in Kannada too, where your customers use it (bilingual websites)
- Fast on mobile (speed guide)
Elsewhere
- Consistent listings on major directories for your industry
- Mentions on local news, associations, event pages or partner sites
Write content that AI can quote
AI answers lift clear, specific statements. Compare:
- Vague: "We offer the best services at affordable prices."
- Quotable: "Physiotherapy sessions cost ₹500–₹800 and last 45 minutes. We're open 8 am–8 pm, Monday to Saturday, and 9 am–1 pm on Sundays, near Gopi Circle, Shivamogga."
Start each page with a direct answer, then add detail. Use tables for prices and timings. Update anything that changes.
Check what AI says about you
Once a month:
- Ask AI Mode questions customers would ask, in English and Kannada: "best [service] in [area]", "[your business] timings", "[your business] price"
- Note whether you appear, and whether the information is correct
- Fix the source of any wrong information (usually your profile, website or an old listing)
- Check the Search Console generative AI report for AI impressions, if available
October 2026: more links, an "official websites" test
Google's 15 October 2026 update increases links in AI answers and tests a section highlighting official websites. For local businesses, that's a strong reason to have your own clear website rather than relying only on directories. Details: Google's AI Mode links update.
