Google's October 2026 AI Mode Update: More Links, an 'Official Websites' Section and What It Means for Your Traffic
Updated 24 October 2026.
Since AI Overviews and AI Mode arrived, many website owners have seen the same pattern in Search Console: impressions up, clicks flat or down. People get the answer from Google's AI summary and never visit a site.
On 15 October 2026, Google announced a set of changes aimed squarely at that complaint. Here's what was announced, what's live versus in testing, and what a business in Bangalore or Shivamogga should actually do.
What Google announced
| Change | What it does | Status |
|---|---|---|
| More inline links | More links inside AI responses, shown higher up and more often | Google says it has made "substantial increases" and is launching higher placement |
| Official websites section | A section at the top of some AI answers that highlights the official site(s) for a task, with context on why each helps | Testing |
| News carousels | Carousels of timely articles in AI features expanding to more locations and languages; highlights Preferred Sources | Starting to roll out |
| Image thumbnails on related links | Links at the end of some AI responses become more visual | Announced; timing not specified |
| Clickable creator names on video results | Creator and publisher names in AI Mode video results link to their Search profiles | Testing |
Google also said the number of people using Preferred Sources (which lets users choose news sites they want to see more of) has grown more than 7x since the start of the year.
The "official websites" test, explained
Some tasks have only one or two genuinely official sources: renewing a passport, paying a property tax, checking an exam result, or booking with a specific business. Google is testing a dedicated section at the top of AI answers for those cases, so users can go straight to the right site.
Google hasn't explained how it decides which sites count as "official". Sensibly, you should expect it to lean on signals Google already uses to understand entities:
- Your brand name matching your domain and your Google Business Profile
- Consistent name, address and phone across the web
- Clear Organisation or LocalBusiness structured data
- An About page that states who you are, where you operate and what you do
- Other trusted sites (directories, news, partners) linking to you as the official site
For a local business, this is a chance to make sure that when someone asks AI Mode about your business, your website is the one Google points to, not a directory listing or an aggregator.
What this means for different businesses
Local service businesses (clinics, salons, coaching, homestays). Most of your discovery still happens in the map pack. But questions like "does [your clinic] open on Sunday?" or "fees for [your coaching centre]" increasingly get answered by AI. Make sure those answers exist on your site and your profile. See AI Overviews and AI Mode for local businesses.
Startups and SaaS. Comparison and "how to" queries are where AI answers dominate. Inline links reward pages that answer one specific question clearly, with evidence. Thin listicles don't get cited.
Publishers and blogs. The expanded news carousels and Preferred Sources reward sites that readers actively choose. Ask your loyal readers to add you as a preferred source.
What to do this month
- Check your branded answers. Search your business name in AI Mode (and ask "what does [business] do", "[business] timings", "[business] price"). Note what's wrong or missing.
- Fix your entity basics. Consistent name and contact details, Organisation/LocalBusiness schema, a factual About page, and a verified Google Business Profile.
- Build one page per question that matters. Pricing, process, areas served, timings, eligibility. A page that answers one question precisely is easier to link than a long page that answers everything vaguely.
- Write for extraction. A direct answer in the first two sentences, then detail, tables and steps. Headings that match how people ask.
- Measure AI visibility. Use the Search Console generative AI report where available, and track AI referrals in GA4.
Is this a ranking update?
No. This is a change to how AI features display links, not a core ranking update. As of 24 October 2026, the most recent confirmed ranking change on Google's Search Status Dashboard is the September 2026 spam update, which finished on 8 October. Forum chatter about an "October update" hasn't been confirmed by Google.
The bigger picture
AI answers aren't going away, and links in them will stay competitive. The businesses that keep earning clicks are the ones Google can identify clearly and trust: a real entity, consistent details, and pages that directly answer what customers ask. That's the same foundation good local SEO has always needed, now with higher stakes. More in Generative Engine Optimisation for small businesses.
