Is PHP Still Worth Learning in 2026? PHP vs JavaScript (MERN) for Freshers in India

Updated 24 October 2026.

This month, PHP2Shell (explained) made headlines across India, with CERT-In issuing a critical advisory. Some students now ask: is PHP dying? Is it unsafe? Should I still learn it?

Here's an honest answer for freshers in Shivamogga and across Karnataka.

First: PHP2Shell isn't a reason to avoid PHP

PHP2Shell was a serious bug in the PHP engine, patched within weeks of being reported. Every major platform has had critical vulnerabilities: Java (Log4Shell), OpenSSL (Heartbleed), Node.js packages, browsers, operating systems. The lesson isn't "avoid PHP". It's "keep software updated", which applies to every language.

Where PHP stands in 2026

Still huge:

  • PHP runs a very large share of websites whose server language is known
  • WordPress (PHP) powers a big part of the web, including countless Indian small business sites
  • WooCommerce, Magento, Drupal, Joomla and many custom portals run on PHP
  • Laravel is a popular, modern framework for web apps and MVPs (Laravel 13)

Still improving:

  • PHP 8.x is much faster than PHP 5 and 7
  • PHP 8.5 (Nov 2025) added the pipe operator; PHP 8.6 is due 19 November 2026 (what's new)

But: most new startup products and product-company stacks in Bangalore lean towards JavaScript/TypeScript (Node.js, React, Next.js), Python, Java and Go.

PHP vs JavaScript (MERN) for freshers

PHP (WordPress / Laravel)JavaScript (MERN)
Main useWebsites, CMSs, e-commerce, business appsWeb apps, SaaS, real-time apps, APIs
FrontendNeeds JavaScript anyway for interactivitySame language for frontend and backend
Who hiresAgencies, WordPress shops, service companies, freelance clientsStartups, product companies, service companies
Freelance demandVery strong (WordPress sites, fixes, maintenance)Strong (web apps, dashboards, MVPs)
Learning curveEasy to start; good practices take disciplineModerate; JavaScript quirks and async concepts
HostingCheap shared hosting everywhereCloud platforms, VPS, serverless
Ecosystem momentumMature, stableVery active, fast-moving

Our recommendation

If you're starting from zero: learn JavaScript properly first. You need it for any web work, and with MERN (MongoDB, Express, React, Node.js) you can build complete apps in one language. See what is the MERN stack?

Then add PHP if:

  • You want to freelance for local businesses (WordPress is everywhere; see freelancing from Shivamogga)
  • You're joining an agency or company with PHP projects
  • You like Laravel, which is genuinely enjoyable for business apps

Skills that transfer either way: HTTP and APIs, databases and SQL, Git (guide), security basics, Linux, Docker and deployment (Docker for beginners). Interestingly, PHP2Shell is a great example of why DevOps skills matter: someone has to patch, rebuild and restart thousands of servers. See our DevOps roadmap.

What employers want in 2026, whatever the language

  • Can you build and deploy a working app?
  • Can you read and debug other people's code, including AI-generated code? (AI and freshers)
  • Do you understand security basics and why updates matter?
  • Can you explain your decisions?

A portfolio of deployed projects beats a certificate in any language. Ideas: portfolio projects that get freshers hired.

Is PHP dead?

No. PHP will keep running a large share of the web for many years, and someone has to build, maintain, secure and upgrade those sites. That's steady work. But if you want the widest range of options as a fresher, JavaScript first, PHP second is the stronger path.
