PHP 8.6 Release Date and New Features: Partial Function Application, Readonly Defaults and More

Updated 24 October 2026. Release dates are targets until PHP announces general availability.

PHP releases a new version every November. PHP 8.6 is scheduled for 19 November 2026. It arrives in an unusual month: the PHP world has just been through the PHP2Shell emergency (explained), and many sites are still running versions that are about to lose support.

Here's what's in PHP 8.6, and what it means for developers and businesses.

The release timeline

  • 22 September 2026: feature freeze
  • October–November: release candidates (RC4 listed for 5 November)
  • 19 November 2026: planned general availability

As with every release, PHP 8.6 should get about two years of active support and two years of security fixes.

New in PHP 8.6

Partial function application. You can call a function with some arguments left open, and PHP returns a closure waiting for the rest. It pairs naturally with PHP 8.5's pipe operator for readable data transformations.

Readonly property defaults. Readonly properties can now have default values, useful for fixed metadata in classes and value objects.

A Duration type. A new time duration type (reported as Time\Duration) represents elapsed time with nanosecond precision, cleaner than juggling integers and floats.

A native polling API. A new API for waiting on multiple I/O streams, helpful for async and event-driven code.

Smaller additions and deprecations. Reports mention a clamp() function, parameter doc comments and a set of deprecations. Check the official release notes and the upgrade guide before moving code.

Some blogs publish performance numbers from beta builds. Treat those as early and unconfirmed until official benchmarks and real-world reports appear.

Quick recap: what PHP 8.5 added (November 2025)

If you're jumping from 8.2 or 8.3, you'll get PHP 8.5's features too:

  • Pipe operator (|>): chain function calls left to right instead of nesting them
  • Built-in URI extension: standards-compliant URL parsing (RFC 3986 and WHATWG), safer than parse_url() for strict cases
  • clone with: change properties while cloning, great for readonly classes
  • array_first() and array_last()
  • #[\NoDiscard]: warn when a return value is ignored
  • Fatal error backtraces for easier debugging
  • Deprecation of the backtick shell operator

Should your website upgrade to PHP 8.6?

Not on release day, for most businesses.

You areWhen to move to 8.6
WordPress business siteAfter your host offers it and your plugins and theme support it, typically a few months after release
WooCommerce storeAfter WooCommerce and your payment and shipping plugins confirm support
Laravel or Symfony appWhen the framework and your dependencies support it; test in CI
New custom project starting in 2027Good candidate to start on 8.6

What matters more right now:

  • Get off PHP 8.1 and older (end of life)
  • Get off PHP 8.2 before 31 December 2026 (plan)
  • Move to 8.3 or 8.4 as a stable, well-supported base (all dates)

For developers: how to prepare

  • Run your test suite against PHP 8.6 RC builds in CI (official php Docker images publish RC tags)
  • Fix deprecation notices from 8.4 and 8.5 first
  • Check composer.json constraints for libraries that pin <8.6
  • Learn the pipe operator and partial application together. They change how idiomatic PHP will look
