No-Code vs Custom Code for Your MVP: How Founders Should Decide

"Should we build this in Bubble first?" is one of the most common questions founders ask before an MVP. Sometimes the answer is yes, and it saves months. Sometimes it creates a product that has to be thrown away the moment it works.

What an MVP is for

An MVP exists to test your riskiest assumption with real users: will people sign up, use it weekly, pay for it? The best build approach is the one that gets that answer fastest at acceptable quality. Read MVP development cost in India for scoping.

What counts as no-code

  • Websites and landing pages: Webflow, Framer, Wix
  • Web apps: Bubble, Softr, WeWeb
  • Mobile apps: Glide, Adalo, FlutterFlow (low-code)
  • Automation: Zapier, Make, n8n
  • Databases and back offices: Airtable, Google Sheets, Notion

No-code is the right call when

  • You're testing whether anyone wants this at all
  • The workflow is simple: forms, lists, bookings, dashboards, approvals
  • It's an internal tool or a back office
  • You need something in front of users this month on a small budget
  • A concierge MVP (you doing the work manually behind a simple front end) would answer the question

Custom code is the right call when

  • The core value is in the software itself: algorithms, real-time features, complex data
  • You handle sensitive data (health, finance, children) and need control over storage and security
  • You need specific integrations: payment flows, hardware, government or banking APIs
  • Performance and mobile experience are part of the product
  • You've already validated demand and need a foundation you can scale

The hidden costs

No-code: per-user or usage-based pricing, plugin subscriptions, platform limits you discover late, and a rebuild when you outgrow it. Your data model and logic don't transfer.

Custom: more upfront time, a need for code review and maintenance, and the temptation to build too much. Scope discipline matters more than the tech choice.

What about AI coding tools?

AI tools have made custom code much faster to write. That shrinks the speed gap with no-code. But generated code still needs someone who understands architecture, data, security and deployment, otherwise you get a fast prototype that's fragile in production.

A practical middle path

Many successful startups combine both:

  1. Landing page and waitlist on a fast site to test demand
  2. Concierge or no-code prototype to test the workflow with 10–20 users
  3. Custom MVP of the core workflow once people are using and paying
  4. No-code tools for the back office (Sheets, Airtable, Zapier) until it hurts

Plan the exit before you start: export your data regularly, document the workflows, and keep the brand, domain and accounts in your name.

Where we fit

We help founders choose honestly. Sometimes that means a no-code prototype first. When it's time for a real product, we build a custom MVP with a fixed, itemised scope, plus the website, tracking and launch campaigns. See also how to launch a SaaS startup from Bangalore.
