What Is MCP (Model Context Protocol)? Why Marketers and Developers Keep Hearing About It in 2026
Updated 24 October 2026.
A year ago, "MCP" was mostly a term developers used. In October 2026, Meta talked about its Ads MCP server at Advertising Week, letting external AI tools work with ad campaigns. Code editors, design tools, CRMs and analytics platforms now ship MCP support too.
If you're a founder, marketer or developer, here's what MCP is and why it's suddenly everywhere.
MCP in one sentence
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect to tools and data: your files, databases, apps and services, in a consistent, permissioned way.
Analogy: USB-C for AI. Before USB-C, every device needed its own cable. Before MCP, every AI tool needed custom integrations for every app. MCP gives them one common plug.
How it works
There are three parts:
| Part | What it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Host / client | The AI app you use | An AI chat app, a coding assistant, an agent |
| MCP server | A connector that exposes tools and data from a service | A server for your database, GitHub, Google Drive, or an ad platform |
| Tools and resources | Specific actions and data the server offers | "Search orders", "Create draft campaign", "Read analytics report" |
When you ask the assistant something like "Summarise last week's ad performance and draft a new campaign for our Diwali offer", it can call the relevant MCP tools, with your permission, instead of you copying data back and forth.
MCP was introduced by Anthropic in November 2024 as an open protocol, and has since been adopted widely across the AI industry.
Why marketers are hearing about it
At Advertising Week on 6 October 2026, Meta discussed its Ads MCP server, which lets external AI tools work with Meta ad campaigns. Work staged by an AI agent lands as a draft in Ads Manager, with approval controls. Availability was described as limited to selected large advertisers and agencies at first. See Meta's October 2026 AI ad updates.
In practice, MCP-style integrations let marketers:
- Ask an assistant to pull reports across ad accounts and analytics
- Draft campaigns and creative for human review
- Monitor spend and performance and get alerts
- Connect CRM, ads and analytics data for better decisions
The key phrase is for human review. Letting AI change live budgets without approval is a risk no small business should take.
Why developers are hearing about it
For developers, MCP is now a practical skill:
- Coding assistants use MCP to read issues, query databases, run tests and access documentation
- Companies build MCP servers for their own products so customers' AI tools can use them
- Internal tools: an MCP server over your company's data lets staff ask questions in plain language
A basic MCP server is a small program (Node.js and Python SDKs are common) that defines tools with names, descriptions and input schemas, and returns results. If you can build a REST API, you can learn to build an MCP server. It's a strong portfolio project for 2026; see what freshers should learn in the age of AI coding.
What it means for small businesses and startups
1. Your tools will increasingly "talk" to AI. Expect ad platforms, CRMs, accounting software and e-commerce platforms to offer MCP or similar connectors.
2. Permissions matter more than ever. If an AI assistant can act in your ad account or store, decide:
- Who can connect AI tools to business accounts
- What they can do (read only, draft only, or act)
- Which approvals are required before changes go live
- How you'll audit what changed
3. Data protection applies. Connecting customer data to AI tools is processing personal data. India's DPDP obligations are phasing in; see DPDP compliance for small businesses.
4. Startups can build on it. If your product has an API, an MCP server can make it usable inside customers' AI assistants, a potential distribution advantage. It also fits the shift towards AI agents that research and buy, covered in UPI AI agent payments.
Risks to keep in mind
- Over-permissioned connections: give AI tools the minimum access they need
- Untrusted servers: only install MCP servers from sources you trust; a malicious server can misuse data or instructions
- Prompt injection: content an AI reads (emails, web pages, documents) can contain instructions meant to mislead it; keep human approval for important actions
- Silent mistakes: AI can be confidently wrong, so review drafts before publishing or spending
