Is My WordPress Site Affected by PHP2Shell? How to Check and Fix It in 15 Minutes

Updated 24 October 2026.

If you run a WordPress website for your clinic, coaching centre, shop, homestay or startup, you've probably seen alarming headlines about PHP2Shell. Here's the short version for WordPress owners:

  • WordPress runs on PHP. So does every plugin and theme.
  • PHP2Shell is a bug in PHP itself, not in WordPress.
  • Researchers demonstrated attacks on a default WordPress install, with no vulnerable plugin needed.
  • So every WordPress site is in scope until PHP is updated.

Full background: PHP2Shell explained.

Step 1: Find your PHP version (2 minutes)

In your WordPress dashboard:

  1. Go to Tools → Site Health
  2. Click the Info tab
  3. Expand Server
  4. Note the PHP version

Then compare:

You seeStatus
8.5.12 or higherPatched
8.4.27 or higherPatched
8.3.36 or higherPatched
8.2.35 or higherPatched (but PHP 8.2 support ends 31 Dec 2026)
Lower 8.2–8.5 numbersLikely not patched, unless your host applied a backported fix (see below)
8.1, 8.0 or 7.4End of life: ask your host whether a patched build is installed; plan an upgrade
7.3 or olderEnd of life, no fix: upgrade urgently

Important: some hosts and Linux distributions apply the fix without changing the version number. If your number looks old, check the build date (in hosting panels, often under PHP info) or your host's announcement. A build date of 21 October 2026 or later is a good sign on many hosts. More ways to check: how to check your PHP version.

Step 2: Check what your host has done (5 minutes)

Shared, cloud or managed WordPress hosting: your host controls PHP. Most large hosts patched within a day or two of 21 October. Look for an email, a status page or a support article. We track the main ones in PHP2Shell hosting patch status.

If you can't find anything, message support:

"Has PHP on my hosting account been patched for CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619 (PHP2Shell)? Which PHP version and build is my site running?"

VPS or your own server (DigitalOcean, AWS Lightsail, a VPS plan): you are responsible. Follow patching PHP2Shell on a VPS.

Step 3: If you're on old PHP, plan an upgrade

Many Indian small business sites still run PHP 7.4 or 8.0 because "it works" and nobody wants to break it. PHP2Shell is the moment to fix that:

  • PHP 8.1 and older get no official releases from PHP anymore
  • WordPress 7.0 requires PHP 7.4 at minimum and recommends 8.3 or newer (details)
  • PHP 8.2 loses security support on 31 December 2026 (what to do)

The sensible target for most WordPress sites today is PHP 8.3 or 8.4. Upgrade carefully: how to upgrade WordPress to PHP 8.3 safely.

What does NOT fix PHP2Shell

  • Updating WordPress core
  • Updating plugins and themes
  • Installing Wordfence, Sucuri or another security plugin
  • Changing your admin password

All are good habits, but none touch the PHP engine. A web application firewall at the edge (for example Cloudflare, which deployed rules for known attack patterns) adds a layer of protection, but it isn't a fix.

Step 4: Check for signs of compromise

Exploit attempts were recorded from 17 October, before the patch. After patching, spend 10 minutes checking:

  • Users → All Users: any administrator accounts you don't recognise?
  • Files: unknown .php files in wp-content/uploads (there should normally be none)
  • Site behaviour: redirects to strange sites, spam pages in Google (site:yourdomain.com), new pop-ups
  • Hosting alerts: malware notifications, unusual CPU usage, outgoing spam warnings

If anything looks wrong, follow was my website hacked through PHP2Shell?

Step 5: Make it harder next time

  • Stay on a supported PHP version and let your host apply updates
  • Keep daily off-site backups, and test a restore once
  • Remove unused plugins and themes
  • Use managed WordPress hosting if no one on your team manages servers
  • Put your site behind a CDN with a WAF
  • Follow our website security checklist for small businesses

A quick decision guide

Your situationWhat to do
Managed WordPress hosting, PHP 8.2+Confirm host patched; check for odd users and files
Shared hosting, PHP 8.1 or olderAsk host about patched build; upgrade PHP within weeks
VPS you managePatch PHP now, restart workers, check logs
Don't know who hosts your siteFind out today: your developer, domain provider or invoices will tell you
Site built years ago, nobody maintains itGet it reviewed; consider rebuilding on a maintained setup
