WordPress 7.0 PHP Requirements: Minimum PHP 7.4, Recommended 8.3+, and What Happens to Older Sites

Updated 24 October 2026.

WordPress powers a large share of small business websites in India. With WordPress 7.0, the project raised its minimum PHP requirement. At the same time, the PHP2Shell emergency (explained) showed why PHP version matters more than WordPress version for security.

WordPress 7.0 requirements

RequirementWordPress 7.0
Minimum PHP7.4 (up from 7.2.24)
Recommended PHP8.3 or newer (some hosting guidance suggests 8.4 or 8.5 for new installs)
PHP compatibilityReported support for PHP 8.0 through 8.5
MySQL / MariaDBMinimum 5.5.5; MySQL 8.0+ or a current MariaDB recommended
HTTPSRecommended

Sites running PHP 7.2 or 7.3 can't update to 7.0; they stay on the 6.9 branch.

Minimum is not the same as safe

This is the key point many site owners miss:

  • WordPress's minimum means "WordPress will run"
  • It doesn't mean "this PHP version is secure"
  • PHP 7.4 has been end of life since November 2022: no official PHP fixes
  • For PHP2Shell, PHP 7.4 to 8.1 got only minimal source backports; whether your site is protected depends entirely on your host

So a site meeting WordPress 7.0's minimum (PHP 7.4) can still be one of the most exposed sites on the internet. All dates: PHP supported versions.

What WordPress version does PHP2Shell affect?

All of them. PHP2Shell is a flaw in the PHP engine. Researchers demonstrated attacks on the latest WordPress in its default configuration. Updating to WordPress 7.0 doesn't protect you; updating PHP does. See is my WordPress site affected by PHP2Shell?

What WordPress 7.0 means for your site

If you're on PHP 8.3+: update to WordPress 7.0 as normal (after a backup), and keep plugins updated.

If you're on PHP 8.0–8.2: WordPress 7.0 works, but your PHP is end of life (8.0, 8.1) or will be soon (8.2 on 31 Dec 2026). Plan a PHP upgrade alongside the WordPress update. See PHP 8.2 end of life.

If you're on PHP 7.4: you can run WordPress 7.0, but your PHP is four years past end of life. Upgrade PHP first, carefully: upgrade WordPress to PHP 8.3 or 8.4 safely.

If you're on PHP 7.3 or older: you're stuck on WordPress 6.9 and an unpatched PHP. This is urgent.

Before updating to WordPress 7.0

WordPress 7.0 has been described as one of the biggest core releases in years. Prepare properly:

  • Backup files and database
  • Check your PHP version (how) and upgrade if needed
  • Update plugins and themes first
  • Test on staging, especially page builders, WooCommerce and custom code
  • Check Site Health after updating

Is WordPress still the right choice?

For many small businesses, yes: it's flexible, familiar and well supported. But PHP2Shell is a reminder that WordPress sites need maintenance: PHP updates, plugin updates, backups and monitoring. If nobody will do that, consider managed WordPress hosting or a simpler, static or custom site. We compare options in WordPress vs Wix vs custom websites and PHP vs Node.js for business websites.
