PHP or Node.js for Your Business Website in 2026? What PHP2Shell Teaches Founders About Choosing a Stack

Updated 24 October 2026.

PHP2Shell (explained) made founders and business owners ask a reasonable question: should we avoid PHP for our next website or product?

The honest answer: PHP2Shell isn't a reason to switch stacks. It's a reason to plan maintenance. Here's how to choose.

No stack is "safe" by default

  • PHP had PHP2Shell in October 2026
  • Node.js has regular security releases, and the npm ecosystem has seen many malicious or compromised packages
  • Java had Log4Shell; Python, Ruby, .NET all ship security fixes regularly

What separates safe sites from compromised ones is almost always how quickly they're updated, not which language they use.

The real options for a business website or MVP

OptionStackBest forMaintenance
WordPressPHP + MySQLContent-heavy business sites, blogs, simple shops; non-technical teams editingPHP, core, plugin and theme updates; backups
Laravel appPHPCustom web apps, portals, admin-heavy MVPsPHP, framework and package updates
Next.js / React appNode.js + JavaScriptInteractive web apps, SaaS, fast marketing sitesNode, framework and npm package updates
Static or prerendered siteBuilt with Node, served as static filesMarketing sites, landing pages, content sitesVery little server-side code to patch

When PHP (WordPress or Laravel) is the better choice

  • Your team needs to edit content often without a developer
  • You need plugins for bookings, memberships, multilingual or SEO quickly
  • You want low-cost hosting available everywhere in India
  • You're building an admin-heavy business app where Laravel's conventions save time
  • You'll hire local freelancers or agencies, where PHP and WordPress skills are common

When Node.js is the better choice

  • You're building a web app or SaaS with a lot of interactivity
  • You want one language (JavaScript or TypeScript) across frontend and backend
  • You need real-time features (chat, live updates)
  • You'll hire from the startup talent pool in Bangalore, which leans JavaScript
  • You want a prerendered marketing site with excellent speed

The option many businesses overlook: prerendered sites

A prerendered or static website is generated once and served as plain files from a CDN. There's no PHP or Node process answering each request on a public server, so runtime bugs like PHP2Shell have far less to attack. These sites are also very fast (why speed matters).

Our own website works this way: a React site prerendered at build time, with forms handled by a separate service. Content still needs updating, but there's very little server-side software to patch.

Trade-offs: editing usually needs a developer or a headless CMS, and dynamic features (logins, carts) need separate services.

Questions to decide your stack

  1. Who will update content, and how often?
  2. Who will apply security updates, and how fast? (Name a person or company)
  3. Is this a website (information, leads) or an app (logins, workflows, data)?
  4. What's your budget for maintenance, not just the build?
  5. Who will you hire to extend it in two years?

If you can't answer question 2, choose managed hosting or a static site, whatever the language.

Maintenance budget: the part most quotes leave out

Whatever you choose, budget for:

  • Security and version updates (PHP or Node, framework, plugins or packages)
  • Backups and occasional restore tests
  • Monitoring (uptime, errors)
  • Hosting that patches quickly (what hosts did for PHP2Shell)

Ask any developer how they'll handle this before you sign: see 15 questions to ask before hiring a website developer.
