Shopify vs WooCommerce vs Custom: Choosing an E-commerce Platform for an Indian D2C Brand

Every D2C founder hits this decision early: Shopify, WooCommerce, or build something custom? The wrong choice doesn't kill a brand, but it can cost months and lakhs to fix later.

If you're still at the idea stage, start with how to start a D2C brand in Bangalore.

The short answer

  • Launching your first products, small team: Shopify
  • Content-heavy brand, tight budget, someone technical on hand: WooCommerce
  • Proven demand, unique buying experience or complex logic: custom or headless

Plan prices change. Compare current pricing for your expected order volume, including app and gateway fees.

India-specific checks (on any platform)

  • Payments: UPI, cards, net banking and wallets through gateways such as Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree or PhonePe. Check settlement times and fees.
  • Cash on delivery: COD is still common. Look for COD verification (OTP or WhatsApp confirmation) and partial-prepaid options to cut return-to-origin losses.
  • Shipping: integrations with aggregators such as Shiprocket, Delhivery or others, pincode serviceability checks and tracking updates.
  • GST: correct tax setup and GST-compliant invoices. Talk to your CA.
  • WhatsApp: order confirmations, abandoned-cart reminders and support. See WhatsApp Business app vs API.
  • Mobile checkout: most Indian D2C traffic is on phones. Test the checkout on a mid-range Android phone on mobile data.

When Shopify is the right call

  • You want to sell in weeks, not months
  • Nobody on the team wants to manage servers or plugin updates
  • Your products and checkout are fairly standard
  • You'll rely on apps for reviews, subscriptions, upsells and loyalty

Watch out for: app costs that add up month after month, heavy themes slowing the site, and transaction fees if you don't use Shopify's preferred payment setup.

When WooCommerce is the right call

  • You already have a WordPress site with content that ranks
  • You want full ownership of the code and data
  • You or a developer can handle updates, backups and security

Watch out for: cheap hosting, too many plugins and slow mobile pages. See WordPress vs custom websites.

When to go custom or headless

  • You've validated demand and the store is now a bottleneck
  • You need unique features: product configurators, complex subscriptions, B2B pricing, marketplace logic
  • Speed and Core Web Vitals are a competitive advantage (why speed matters)
  • You want to integrate deeply with your ERP, warehouse or app

Headless keeps a platform like Shopify for products, orders and checkout, with a custom front end on top. It's often the best of both, but costs more to build and maintain.

Don't forget the launch

The platform is maybe a third of the work. The rest is product photography, a clear brand story, SEO-friendly category and product pages, tracking, and the first Meta and Google Ads campaigns.

Where we fit

We help D2C founders pick the right platform for their stage, then build and launch the store: product pages, payments, COD and shipping setup, tracking, and launch campaigns. See website development and our e-commerce guide.
